On Sept. 1, U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth posted a photo on X from the Vernon Cadet Training Centre in B.C. showing two cadets in Canadian uniform, depicting a young cadet receiving a medal from an instructor with a Canadian flag emoji and the added caption “this is real.” As the instructor was demonstrably overweight, Hegseth’s purpose was clear: To fat-shame our serving members and portray them as unfit for duty. Juvenile, taunting. Pathetic are three adjectives to aptly describe the secretary, evidently made in the image of his commander-in-chief Donald Trump.

With all the hackers stealing our info, and fake emails, and fake phone-calls, we have gone full circle, where the only safe way to communicate is by letter. Remember those? You write something, put it in an envelope, add a stamp, which you now get from the drug store, and stick it in a box. Somebody picks it up and it goes on a tour, then finally the person you want to contact, gets it in their mailbox. Wow! How clever is that. At least it’s safer. It might take a week to go across the street, but nobody else gets the information. I still feel Amazon should take over mail. They can get just about anything to your door overnight. Things arrive quicker than I can get to the store.
