WAR FOOTING
Is it really necessary for Prime Minister Mark Carney to publicly announce that Canada is reviewing its preparedness for war with the U.S.? Sounds like a shot at the midterms in November. This announcement will only antagonize Donald Trump and render any reconciliation more difficult. Why not conduct the review of preparedness behind the scenes, as most serious issues are conducted? This tit-for-tat is becoming childish.

BAD CHOICE
What’s the difference between Kenneth Law and the Canadian government, when it comes to peddling death to those wishing to commit suicide? Near as I can tell, one doesn’t cost me anything, while the other does. To prosecute this man, while encouraging doctors to do the same thing with impunity is pure hypocrisy. In either case, both are immoral disregard for human life.

SHE ATE MY CAKE!
Re “Toronto stalls as taxes soar under Olivia Chow’s mayoralty” (Brian Lilley, Sept. 24): I have to agree with Brian Lilley’s column, except for his comment that Olivia Chow is a “nice woman.” I say this from past experience. Many years ago, I was the executive assistant to several members of Toronto City Council. In 2001, I was invited to the annual Chief of Police’s fundraising dinner, and I sat at the table purchased by the Toronto Police Services Board. The table was filled with no extra seats available. Olivia Chow arrived after dinner was finished. After dinner, I stepped away from the table for a few minutes, and when I returned there was Olivia Chow sitting in my seat and enjoying my dessert and coffee. She would not move; but continued to sit in my seat and wouldn’t allow me to sit in my chair. That kind of act only shows a sense of self-entitlement and true arrogance. Doesn’t this reveal her true nature? She had my dessert and she ate it too!
