A GOOD CHOICE
I was quite pleased to see that Louise Arbour has been named as the next Governor General of Canada. She was a great influence and role model for me through most of my adult life. From my years at Osgoode Hall Law School when I was a student in the late ’70s to my law practice during her tenure on the Supreme Court of Canada, she was someone to look up to. Finally, during my 22 years with the Immigration and Refugee Board, she was a further inspiration when she became the High Commissioner of the UNHCR. Congratulations to our brand new GG. indeed. Canada continues to make its mark on the world.

(It was a choice in keeping with how the Liberals appoint a GG – political)

COSTLY ROLE
Most Canadians probably don’t care who the new Governor General is, please stop the colossal waste of money. This is not your personal piggy bank. Each passing GG says things will get better but it just gets worse. Stop it.

(You’re correct most Canadians don’t care – until they see how much they spend)

PAY FOR THEE, NOT FOR ME
My wife and I received an increase in our Old Age Security for April. The amount we received was $1.64 for both of us. Wow. When I read about the annual salary increases for the prime minister, cabinet ministers, parliamentary secretaries, MPs, and Governor General, I really think there is something wrong here. What can we do about it? Nothing.

MUZZLING CRITICS
Re “Power mad move by the Liberals” (Editorial, May 3): With regard to the Liberals’ latest moves to override parliamentary purpose with their committee shenanigans, it makes one wonder what they are hiding that they fear will damage their standing once uncovered. Their obsession with muzzling the opposition suggests they have a lot to be afraid of in terms of what will come to light.
