A COMPROMISE
Re “China’s bully tactics losing their potency, Taiwanese experts say” (Bryan Passifiume, May 21): The only hope for a peaceful reunification of China would be for the mainland to agree to some form of ‘one country, two systems’ firmly incorporated into a UN Security Council resolution. Taiwan would be guaranteed a substantial level of home rule together with its own domestic police force. We know from examples like Scotland in the U.K. that local governments can be given substantial autonomy within a larger nation. Mainland China cannot yet be trusted to follow a ‘one country, two systems approach’ as may be seen by the example of Hong Kong. However, that does not mean that such an approach will never be possible.

(China has shown no interest in anything other than invasion)

MESS THEY HAVE MADE
Hey, Mayor Olivia Chow, 747s and the like will not be landing at Island Airport every two minutes. Why don’t you tell the people exactly what type of aircraft will be landing and how many per day. You want to have a referendum on this issue, then also include one about the removal of live lanes for bike lanes, and include all of Toronto, not just the elite that live at the waterfront. Which, by the way, is far from world class — council has made a mess out of it already.

(Painting the entire picture of the jets at the island airport doesn’t fit into Chow’s longstanding opposition narrative)

MONEY FOR NOTHING
All the complaining about bailing out Canada Post and how it’s such a waste of taxpayers’ money has me wondering why this is so bad, yet spending $1 billion for FIFA (one-time expense) and $1.6 billion for CBC (annual expense) gets a hall pass. At least, in the case of Canada Post, we are getting something for our money, unlike the other two.

(Hosting the World Cup is certainly exciting and there will be short term economic benefits, but the real winner is FIFA. In the long run, we will come to discover the true costs and it will far supersede any gain)
