SNOW WINNING
Re “Air Force reaffirms decision to ground aerobatics team” (Jordan Ercit, June 9): It is interesting, not surprising, and very predictable that the Snowbirds are at a crossroad. If this country had any stones, they would have supplied this team with adequate aircraft 30-plus years ago. Unfortunately, this country doesn’t work that way. Being too cheap will do that to you. Conservative MP Fraser Tolmie seems concerned that the USAF Thunderbirds, and also the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels, might replace the Snowbirds at airshows. Believe you me, if we see the Thunderbirds or the Blue Angels more often I’m fine with that. They fly actual combat fighter jets. Here’s what should happen to the Snowbirds. Since Canada is, apparently, transitioning to the F-35, there ought to be enough F-18s available to be refurbished for the Snowbirds. (You’d need at least a dozen planes, and only fly six-plane formations, not nine). Boeing, down in St. Louis, would be more than happy to do the work. But the reality is it ain’t gonna happen. Can you imagine the pride this country would have (should have) if the Snowbirds were to start flying airshows in F-18 Hornets? It’s just a pipe dream, unfortunately.

(It’s typical of the Canadian government to have ignored this issue and let the Snowbirds get essentially cancelled. Such a shame more Canadians aren’t more outraged about this)

Re “PM spent $195Gs on in-flight catering on 3 trips” (Bryan Passifiume, May 28): Note to Mark Carney: Respect hard-working taxpayers’ money by spending it as if it were your own money.
