At the scene, police found a car had gone off the road, through a ditch and into a tree, and later caught fire.
The lone occupant, a 31-year-old man from the nearby town of Jasper, was removed from the car by a passerby and the Smiths Falls officer, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The collision remains under investigation, police said in a news release.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information that could assist investigators was asked to call the Leeds County OPP at 1-888-310-1122 and refer to incident E250000623.
