He opened up about both of his parents contracting the COVID-19 virus with a post on Instagram, revealing they’d been hospitalized and that his mother was placed on a ventilator.
Following her death, Anthony-Towns’ first team, the Minnesota Timberwolves, released a statement calling her a great “wife, parent, daughter, granddaughter, sister, aunt, and friend.” The statement continued, “The matriarch of the Towns family, she was an incredible source of strength; a fiery, caring, and extremely loving person, who touched everyone she met.”

After Anthony-Towns and the Knicks secured their NBA championship in 2026, he spoke with the media about his mother and shared a heartfelt message.
“Thank you, Mama. I appreciate you getting me one,” he said. He also opened up about how he connects with her since her passing in another post-game press conference.
“In moments of true pressure and a lot of things going on, I always feel this calming come to me, and it’s always her. It’s just great to always feel her arms around me and to always feel her love in my life in so many different ways,” he said.

While speaking with ESPN, Anthony-Towns described constantly feeling his mother’s presence in challenging moments, like the NBA Finals, and how that’s helped prepare him to compete on the world’s biggest stage.
“I know what it is to have a lot at stake. I know what it is to fail in those moments. And not with a basketball in my hand. These moments you talk about of high pressure that shake humans and shake people in those moments, I’ve seen too much in a different aspect that you know, just, it’s basketball. The other things I dealt with is real life,” he said.
