Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has reportedly emerged as a potential investor in a Premier League club. The proposed move into English football is being led by a consortium of investors that includes former Queens Park Rangers co-owner Amit Bhatia. The group is reportedly targeting Liverpool and is said to be prepared to offer as much as $6 billion for a strategic minority stake in the club.
Liverpool Owners Confirm Interest From Amit Bhatia-Led Consortium
Bezos may be looking to add another high-profile investment to his portfolio with a stake in Liverpool in the coming months.
Unlike many of his other ventures, where he is the public face, the tech mogul is reportedly part of a consortium led by businessman Amit Bhatia.
Bhatia already has experience in English football, having co-owned QPR until July 21, when he transferred his shares, potentially paving the way for the proposed Liverpool stake purchase. “An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club,” said a spokesperson for FSG, the club’s current owners.
Jeff Bezos’ Reported Liverpool Move Is Still Developing
Andrew Evans / MEGANeither Bezos nor Bhatia has publicly confirmed the move, meaning reports linking Bezos to the proposed deal remain speculative.
However, that is not unusual, as the negotiations are reportedly in their early stages, when confidentiality is typically maintained until discussions progress further or an agreement is reached.
“I should caution that this deal is not yet done. It’s still at a relatively early stage, and it’s my understanding there are a number of other participants in the consortium fronted by Mr. Bhatia,” Sky News analyst Mark Kleinman said.
“But I would be very surprised if Jeff Bezos did not end up forming part of this deal, and taking a stake in Liverpool when it gets across the line at some point in the coming months,” he added.
The Proposed Deal Could Reach $6 Billion
Xavier Collin/Image Press Agency/MEGAIf negotiations are successful, the deal is expected to be worth around $6 billion, with Bezos potentially contributing a significant portion of the investment given his vast wealth.
The proposed investment would also be substantially larger than the previous minority stake sold by Liverpool owners FSG.
“This won’t be the first minority stake that FSG has sold,” another analyst noted. “A couple of years ago, it brought in another U.S. investment firm called Dynasty Equity to buy a relatively small stake. This is much larger, potentially 30%.”
A further implication of the stake sale is that FSG could eventually consider an exit from Liverpool, despite previous reports that the owners have no intention of selling the club.
If that were to happen, Bezos and the other investors in the consortium could seek to acquire a larger share of the club, potentially positioning themselves as majority owners.
Fans Push Back Against Jeff Bezos’ Alleged Move
Anthony Stanley/WENN/MEGABezos’ reported interest in acquiring a stake in Liverpool has sparked criticism over the growing influx of U.S. billionaires into the Premier League.
“The Premier League is going to die with all the criminals from the USA buying stakes in clubs,” one user said.
“Proper Scousers will be livid about this potential news, and 100% will fight against this takeover. They have real morals and values, and a backbone, so I fully expect they’ll do their best to stop it if it happens,” another individual wrote.
“This should be banned. We need more fan ownership, as the Americans will make adjustments for halftime shows,” a third user commented.
JeffBezos Has Weighed Other Sports Investments
Fred Duval/MEGABezos has previously explored opportunities to acquire stakes in major U.S. sports franchises.
Three years ago, he was linked to a potential purchase of the NFL’s Washington Commanders after the team was put up for sale, although he ultimately did not pursue a deal.
More recently, he was also linked to the Seattle Seahawks, this year’s Super Bowl champions, after the Paul Allen estate put the franchise up for sale earlier this year. However, Bezos once again chose not to submit a bid, as confirmed by Puck reporter Dylan Byers on X.
