Jay-Z Opens Up About Fighting With Kanye West Over The ‘MAGA’ Movement In 2021
During the sixth episode of “Jay-Z in 8,” airing on HBO Max, Jay-Z discussed his feature on Kanye’s song, “Jail.”
In the verse, Jay-Z made a critical comment about Donald Trump and his followers, saying, “Stop all of that red cap / we going home.” The line was a diss referring to the politician’s slogan, “Make America Great Again,” which is branded on bright red caps.
According to Jay-Z, who’s married to Beyoncé and shares 3 children with the superstar, he “argued” with Kanye about the verse two weeks after turning it in. “I was like, ‘This is why I didn’t wanna do this verse.’ It wasn’t easy,” Jay-Z recalled.
Jay-Z Says Kanye West Told Him He Was Uncomfortable With His Line About Red Caps
Jay-Z went on to say that during the conversation, Kanye told him that he wasn’t “comfortable” with his line about the red caps and asked him to consider changing it. However, Jay-Z, who’s rapped before about his unwillingness to budge on things he believes in, said he told Kanye that he wouldn’t change it. “And I was like, ‘Sorry, I’m not gonna change it. That’s how I feel,'” he said in the episode.
In fact, Jay-Z told Kanye that if he was so bothered by his statement, then he should “probably take the verse off.” He continued, “If you feel strongly enough about it, I’m not gonna change it, but respectfully, you should take it off because this is your project. Everything on it should be the way you want it to be.'”
Ultimately, the verse stayed on the album. However, things between the two rappers, who once considered each other brothers, soured just years later.

“I’m sorry Jay Z,” Kanye later wrote online. “I be feeling bad about my tweet but I still feel I gave my life to this industry and thought so many people were my family but when I needed family on some real sh-t none of these rap n—s had my back.”
Beyoncé’s mom, Tina Knowles, clapped back at Kanye in a post of her own, saying she was choosing to let a higher power handle her family’s enemies rather than take revenge herself.
“I know that no weapon formed against me or my family shall prosper. This battle is not mine, but the Lords, I know that God has got this,” she said.
