Thump, thump, thump. The bass from the central DJ booth at the Aritzia Warehouse Sale provided a beat to my search for the perfect piece.

As I dragged my giant, overstuffed bag of prospective wares through the seemingly endless aisles of rolling racks packed with garments, I realized the tip of my finger was going numb from where the strap was wrapped around it. But the minor discomfort didn’t stop me from grabbing just one more cashmere sweater and adding it to the tote.

Loud music, large crowds and long lineups are all guaranteed elements of the annual warehouse sale, which sees the Vancouver-headquartered fashion company’s wares marked down between 50-90 per cent off the original retail price.

A veteran of the event, I was prepared for the sensory overload that the sale can often represent. It can be a lot. There are people everywhere — dragging makeshift trains of tote bags tied together by the handles around the aisles, sitting along the walls in close circles with friends and strangers as they rummage through their finds, and even scouring through discarded heaps of clothing in the hopes of finding the right piece.

There’s a competitive air to the sale, as shoppers rush to find the most-wanted items such as Super Puff coats and vests (there were SO many!), discounted Denim Forum jeans, TNA socks and more. But there’s also a camaraderie.

Queries of “Are you going to take that?” or “Can I try that on?” can be heard throughout the aisles and piles of clothing as what’s discarded by one shopper becomes the ultimate score of another.

As I tried on a few leather and suede jackets — the item at the top of my wish list for the sale — people stopped by to snag my castaways pretty much as quickly as I could hang them back up. The sale is a treasure hunt, and it’s fun to find that what doesn’t work for you works for someone else.

Whether you’re new to the sale or a repeat shopper, it can be helpful to enter the event with a plan or list of items to help guide your shopping experience. Otherwise, the endless racks can feel overwhelming. Consider putting together a list of personal top picks that you can keep a particular eye out for while looking around.

It also helps to know the layout of the sale.

When you immediately enter, after the bag check, be sure to grab a tote bag or two from the big black bins in order to carry your stuff around the sale.

To the right, you’ll find racks (and racks) of Super Puff insulated coats and wool jackets. Beyond that, there’s Reigning Champ gear, denim and accessories. The centre point of the sale includes shoes and fleece, along with the DJ booth.
