Fans would remember Liev Schreiber’s Sabretooth from Fox’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and with the return of Hugh Jackman in Deadpool & Wolverine, the discussion on the iconic character might have come to the surface again. The actor is aware of the audience’s enthusiasm to witness him play the role once more, but it seems like he’s already done with it for good.
Interestingly, Schreiber previously expressed interest in reprising his role in 2017’s Logan and it’s undeniably a shame that we didn’t get to see him on the big screen.
Why Liev Schreiber Refused To Return In Deadpool & Wolverine
In his interview last year, Liev Schreiber revealed he was never asked to return as Sabretooth in Hugh Jackman’s Logan in 2017. “They didn’t ask me!” he responded to GQ, but he went on to explain that he doesn’t think his role was in any way part of the film’s narrative. However, given that he was offered to return, he said, “I would’ve loved to bring Victor back, anytime, anywhere”.
Fast forward to the release of Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine, many X-Men characters were spotted making cameos including Gambit, X-23, Toad, Azazel, Juggernaut, Psylocke, and of course, Sabretooth. However, it was Tyler Mane who portrayed Wolverine’s arch-nemesis. Why did Schreiber not return for Deadpool 3?
Speaking with Collider, the Tony awardee admitted he’s aware of the physical demands of playing a comic book character on the screen. He saw Jackman bulk up for the role, and he felt it was something he could no longer do at this stage. “To be honest, it’s a lot of work getting your body up to that point,” he told the outlet. When he learned how his former costar trained for Wolverine again, he immediately thought, “I’m okay to sit by the sidelines”.
That’s quite a massive disappointment because Schreiber was so game and ready in 2017 to play Sabretooth in Logan, which obviously didn’t happen. Fans loved his performance, and he would have been a great addition to the film’s narrative. In fact, they actually had Victor Creed in the original concept, but he was unfortunately excluded from the final screenplay. One last confrontation between Wolverine and Sabretooth would have been epic.
What Was Sabretooth’s Part In 2017’s Logan?
Screenwriter Scott Frank revealed in his conversation with CinemaBlend that he once brought up to director James Mangold the idea where Logan, X-23, and Charles Xavier were on the run and they went to a gambling town and tried to seek help from Sabretooth. “For whatever reason we didn’t do it,” he confessed.
This is certainly an interesting choice of plot because Sabretooth doesn’t look like someone who extends help to anyone, let alone to Wolverine and other superior mutants. As Schreiber mentioned, his character might not fit in the narrative so it was better not to include him anymore.
Logan is currently available to watch on Disney+. Deadpool & Wolverine is still showing in theaters worldwide.
