Cole Campbell will be back to Borussia Dortmund after TSG Hoffenheim refused to exercise their option to buy. The United States attacker suffered a serious ankle injury a week after joining the Sinsheim club in January.

After having to spend some time with the second team to regain full fitness level, Campbell has only made six cameo appearances in Bundesliga. Kicker now report the Kraichgau club will not turn the deal permanent as they deemed €7 million plus bonuses too high.

Campbell will momentarily return to Dortmund where he has a contract until 2028. Since there are interested clubs elsewhere for the United States U21 international, they will not be expected to lower the price for Hoffenheim. Kicker indicated the most likely outcome will be a permanent departure from Dortmund this summer.

Hoffenheim are also expected to sign attacking players as they will most likely accept a big offer for Bazoumana Touré. Christian Ilzer's side will participate in next season's Europa League after a respectable fifth-placed finish.
