During an interview, Jackson made some serious allegations against his father, Joe Jackson, who served as his manager earlier in his career. However, Jackson had some shocking things to say about his father, accusing Jackson Sr of physically and emotionally abusing him when he was younger. Michael Jackson rose to prominence as a member of the Jackson 5, before going on to have one of the most successful careers as a solo artist. Jackson won thirteen Grammy Awards and became one of the best-selling artists of all time. However, despite his success, the singer was plagued by personal issues, especially a problematic relationship with his father.

In a series of taped conversations with Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, Jackson opened up about his relationship with his father, Joe Jackson, who had served as the manager of Jackson 5 and pushed his children to pursue a music career. In the interview, Jackson accused his father of being physically and emotionally abusive towards his children. He said (via Today.com).

He would throw you and hit you as hard as he can. He was very physical.

Jackson added that his father’s parenting lacked any sort of love and affection, believing he had become a money-making machine for his father.

I am scared of my father to this day. My father walked in the room — and God knows I am telling the truth — I have fainted in his presence many times.

Jackson made the above statement, admitting he had also thrown up in his father’s presence. The King of Pop revealed that his father would often lose his temper, resulting in him beating his children.

Furthermore, Jackson also stated that while beating him and his siblings, his father often broke the furniture, underlining the severity of Joe Jackson’s actions towards his children. Therefore, it is evident why Jackson admitted to being afraid of his father growing up.

Joe Jackson Defended Himself Against Michael Jackson’s Abuse Allegations

Despite the allegations from his son, Joe Jackson defended himself against the claims of physical and emotional abuse. During an interview with CNN, Jackson admitted that he was a hard taskmaster and strict with his children. However, Jackson Sr. insisted it was for the well-being of his kids.

I had to be like that way because during those times, it was hard, and you have a lot of gangs there, you know, in the area where we were living.

Furthermore, Jackson’s father added that he was glad he was harsh on his children as it led to them becoming successful artists, revered across the globe.

During a speech at Oxford Union in March 2001, the King of Pop admitted that his father’s difficult upbringing during the Great Depression and working-class adulthood resulted in him restraining his emotions towards his children. As a result, it is safe to say that despite the struggles Jackson understood where his father was coming from.

Ultimately it is evident that Jackson and his father shared an extremely complex relationship. Jackson unfortunately passed away in 2009 at the age of 50. Meanwhile, Joe Jackson suffered from terminal pancreatic cancer during the latter stages of his life, before passing in 2018. The son and father were buried in the same cemetery and we can only hope they both found peace with each other in the afterlife.
