Guelph mayor laughs after finding dartboard with his face on it at Goodwill

Politicians are typically accustomed to mudslinging, but Guelph’s Mayor Cam Guthrie had quite the laugh after finding a dartboard with an image resembling his own face on it during a recent trip to Goodwill.

Sharing the unusual find in a video posted on Facebook on Wednesday, Guthrie, sitting in his car, began his story by saying, “This is hilarious. I just came out of Goodwill because I love going to thrift stores.

“Looking around … Blah, blah, blah … Not much there. I go to the games aisle. And I find this,” he said, before holding up the dartboard, breaking out in laughter, while holding it up next to his face.

“It was 10 bucks,” he said, laughing.

“Someone made a dartboard with my face on it! I think this is me, right?” he said, as he showed off the black-and-yellow dartboard that was wrapped in plastic with two sets of darts.

In the post’s caption, Guthrie recalled some of the things he’s experienced as mayor, including “a bag of dead flies mailed to me, graffiti about me. Lots of memes made about me,” but he said the dartboard was his “most epic surprise find ever.”

He added, “Being mayor is lots of things. But the two most important are: 1. Take the issues seriously. 2. Don’t take yourself too seriously.”

Many appreciatative of his humour

Over 130 people responded to the mayor’s post, with many online chuckling at his thrift store find.

“In some ways, it’s even funnier that somebody donated it to Goodwill,” wrote one commentator. “Like, first it was made, but then somebody decided that they didn’t want it anymore. And, instead of just throwing it out, they donated it to Goodwill, as if to say, I think somebody else is really gonna want this,” they added.

Another person wrote: “A good sense of humour is key to being in public office. You become a ‘target’ in many ways. Again, thank you for your service to Guelph and all the other public servants reading your posts from afar.”

Others said they’ll miss the outgoing mayor, with one person writing, “CAM your ability to laugh will be missed for sure. Hang it in your office for a couple months.”

Mayor ‘happy that it was not used’

Speaking to CTV News, Guthrie said he found the dartboard at the Goodwill on Woodlawn Rd.

He said he intially went through a flood of emotions after seeing the image on the bullseye.

“First of all, I was very happy that it was not used. It’s still in the packaging,” he told CTV News. “Secondly, someone spent money on this. So, you know, if people are looking to spend money on dart boards with politicians’ faces on it or things like that, I would encourage them to give that same amount of money to charities.”

Guthrie, who was first elected as Guelph’s mayor in 2014, announced in March that he was not seeking re-election.
