Canada advanced to the semifinals at the world championship, beating the United States 4-0 in Fribourg, Switzerland, three months after the U.S. beat Canada in overtime to win the gold medal at the Olympics in Milan.

“It’s one of the best rivalries that we have in hockey, and it’s a privilege to be able to play these games against such a good team like that,” Greaves told TSN afterward at BCF Arena. “It’s fun to be in these moments and come out on the right side of it.”

Canada lost defenceman Evan Bouchard to an upper-body injury early in the first period after he was hit by Ryan Lindgren. The U.S. defenceman was given a five-minute major and game misconduct for a illegal check to the head, but the Canadians didn’t score on the extended power play.

Greaves, who plays in the NHL for the Columbus Blue Jackets, was stellar in net, making 34 saves. In the latter stages of the third period, with Canada holding onto a two-goal lead, Greaves made an terrific blocker save on Matt Coronato after losing his stick.

Crosby scores

Connor Brown and Sidney Crosby, with his first goal of the tournament to go with nine assists, each scored into an empty U.S. net in the final two minutes.

Macklin Celebrini scored on a power play in the first period. In the second, Dylan Holloway scored for Canada, which is 8-0 in the tournament.

Devin Cooley made 34 saves for the U.S.

“They were definitely the better team today,” U.S. forward Matthew Tkachuk told TSN. “Their goalie made some incredible saves. They deserved to win.”

Canada’s semifinal opponent on Saturday is to be determined.

In the other early quarterfinal on Thursday, Finland advanced with a 4-1 win against Czechia.
