Glen Powell has finally addressed his long-rumored future in superhero cinema, and his verdict might surprise fans. The Top Gun: Maverick star confirmed that he won’t be joining DCU or MCU anytime soon. Speaking with Collider, Powell said:
So, I love the duality of superhero stories. I love the idea of secret identities. I love all that, but I can’t say that there’s one superhero in particular I’m chasing.
His Hulu series, Chad Powers, has already garnered a lot of attention, and The Running Man is also gearing up for release. So his decision to skip the superhero train for now makes sense. Here’s an overview of his show:
| Series Name | Chad Powers |
| Number of Seasons | 1 |
| Number of Episodes | 6 |
| Showrunner | Michael Waldron & Glen Powell |
| Creator | Glen Powell & Michael Waldron |
| Main Cast | Glen Powell, Perry Mattfeld, Quentin Plair, Steve Zahn, Wynn Everett |
| Rotten Tomatoes (critic score | audience score) | 57% | 80% |
| IMDb | 7.6/10 |
Now, let’s see how he might be playing something close to Batman already, and why he is more interested in underdog narratives.
How Glen Powell Is Already Playing a Batman-Like Superhero in Chad Powers
Before you start imagining Glen Powell in a Batsuit, you might want to check out Chad Powers because, in the show, he’s already playing a character that is sort of inspired by the superhero archetype. He stars as Russ Holliday, a disgraced footballer who tanked his reputation, and this is what he had to say about the series (via Collider):
Michael Waldron and I created Chad Powers, and we always conceptualized that as a superhero story. There’s very much a Batman/Bruce Wayne thing going on there. There’s the super version of you and then there’s sort of the version that you can kind of hide from the world.
In Chad Powers, Russ puts on a wig, some prosthetics, and a fake identity to join a college team under a fake alias. So, it’s not exactly your superhero story, but Powell insisted that’s the point, and perhaps that’s what makes the show such a compelling project.

Glen Powell Will Likely Star in More Underdog Tales and Not Superhero Sagas
Glen Powers in The Running Man | Credits: Paramount PicturesIf Chad Powers symbolizes a superhero experiment, then The Running Man is his full-fledged dive into “underdog storytelling.” In the Collider interview, Glen Powell spoke about how he doesn’t feel that emotional connection when “someone becomes super.”
But the stories that at least get me inspired, the stories that I’ve always wanted to be a part of, are these movies that you saw in the ‘80s and early ‘90s, early 2000s, where it’s like these are truly Man Against the System movies, these David and Goliath stories where no one’s super.
And maybe that’s what Hollywood needs right now! Fewer superhumans and more humans. Powell isn’t exactly closing the door on DC and Marvel forever, but for now, he’s inspired to tell different stories, particularly the ones that remind us how heroism doesn’t always come with a cape.
But if he does ever join one of the two mega franchises, what role would you want him to take on?
Chad Powers is currently streaming on Hulu, and The Running Man is set to release on November 14, 2025 (USA).
