Kevin Diks scored in injury-time as Indonesia advanced to the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup final with a 9-2 victory over Bangladesh. Indonesia needed three goals after the 90th minute mark to finish top of their group ahead of Malaysia, who beat Singapore 6-0 simultaneously.
At the end, Mitchell Lee Baker’s fifth goal of the game secured Indonesia’s place in Monday’s final in the 97th minute. The Borussia Mönchengladbach center-back captained his national team for the first time in the three group stage fixtures.
Thailand already confirmed their place in the final before the final round of fixtures in Group B. The fixture between Indonesia and Thailand is a historic Southeast Asia derby, with the latest match set to decide the first-ever ASEAN Cup winner.
The regional tournament was initiated by the controversial FIFA president Gianni Infantino, without the blessing of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF), which already organize the biannual ASEAN Championship for its member nations.
Diks is yet to miss a single minute of action this season for struggling Gladbach. After four successive defeats in which they conceded 16 goals, the Foals replaced Eugen Polanski with Alexander Blessin.
The 29-year-old will hope to add the ASEAN Cup to the eight trophies he won with his previous clubs before Gladbach’s return to action with the Rhine derby against Köln.
