Ghislaine Maxwell has lost her latest attempt to overturn her sex trafficking conviction and escape her 20-year prison sentence. U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer rejected Maxwell’s habeas petition, describing her claims as “demonstrably meritless” and concluding that she failed to present evidence capable of changing the outcome of her trial.

The judge also accused Maxwell of building her arguments around “speculation, distortions, and/or outright falsehoods.” Maxwell was convicted in December 2021 for her role in recruiting and grooming underage girls for convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Judge Rejects Ghislaine Maxwell’s ‘Miscarriage Of Justice’ Claim

Maxwell argued that her conviction represented a “complete miscarriage of justice” and claimed prosecutors withheld evidence that could have helped clear her. She also alleged that false testimony was presented to jurors during her trial. However, Engelmayer found that Maxwell failed to identify a legitimate factual dispute that could have affected the verdict.

According to the ruling, many of her arguments had already been raised on appeal or could have been presented during the earlier stages of her case. The judge found that her claims were either procedurally barred, meritless, or irrelevant to the charges against her.

Maxwell represented herself while pursuing the latest challenge, which sought to have her conviction and sentence declared unlawful. Her previous efforts to overturn the conviction were unsuccessful. A federal appeals court upheld the verdict, and the Supreme Court declined to hear her appeal in October 2025.

Epstein Files Failed To Help Maxwell’s Case

Maxwell pointed to materials released through the Epstein Files Transparency Act as “substantial new evidence” supporting her request for relief. She argued that the documents showed violations of her constitutional rights and raised questions about how prosecutors handled her case. The court rejected that position, determining that much of the supposedly new evidence had little relevance to the charges for which Maxwell was convicted.

Engelmayer also found that some of the materials cited by Maxwell worked against her rather than supporting her claims. According to Reuters, the judge concluded that Maxwell’s arguments were all meritless and that nearly all of them were frivolous. The decision leaves Maxwell’s conviction and 20-year prison sentence intact.

Four Women Testified During The 2021 Trial

Maxwell was convicted on five felony counts stemming from her involvement with Epstein and the sexual abuse of underage girls. Prosecutors accused her of helping solicit, recruit, and groom minors between 1994 and 2004.

During the trial, four women testified that Epstein sexually abused them when they were under 18. They also told jurors that Maxwell helped recruit and groom girls for Epstein and sometimes participated in the abuse.

Maxwell was found guilty in December 2021 and sentenced the following June to 20 years in federal prison.

Epstein was arrested on federal sex trafficking charges in July 2019 but died in a New York jail the following month while awaiting trial. His death was ruled a suicide.

Annie Farmer Addressed Maxwell At Sentencing

Several survivors delivered statements before Maxwell received her sentence. Annie Farmer criticized Maxwell for refusing to accept responsibility and said her actions continued harming survivors even after the abuse ended. “Maxwell had many opportunities to come clean, but instead continued to make choices that caused more harm. She chose to lie about her behavior, causing additional harm to all of those she victimized,” Farmer said.

Maxwell also addressed the court and apologized for the pain experienced by Epstein’s victims. “Your honor, it is hard for me to address the court after listening to the pain and anguish expressed in the statements made here today. The terrible impact on the lives of so many women is difficult to hear and even more difficult to absorb, both in its scale and in its extent,” she said.

Maxwell Placed Blame On Jeffrey Epstein

During her sentencing remarks, Maxwell described Epstein as manipulative and argued that he should have been forced to answer for his conduct. “I believe that Jeffrey Epstein was a manipulative, cunning and controlling man who lived a profoundly compartmentalized life and fooled all of those in his orbit. Jeff Epstein should have been here before all of you,” she said.

“He should have stood before you in 2005, again in 2009 and again in 2019. All the many times he was accused, charged and prosecuted. But today it is not about Jeffrey Epstein ultimately. To you, all the victims … I am sorry for the pain that you experienced,” she added.

Maxwell is currently incarcerated at a federal prison camp in Bryan, Texas. Her latest petition was a last-resort legal challenge commonly pursued after the conventional appeals process has been exhausted. However, Engelmayer’s rejection means Maxwell will continue serving her sentence unless a future legal action or grant of clemency changes her circumstances.
