A former NFL player recently opened up about Colin Kaepernick‘s personal woes and slammed the former quarterback for creating what he said was a “racial divide” on his team.

Brian Urlacher, a Chicago Bears veteran, said on a podcast that Kaepernick’s actions during his time in the league led him and his family to stop watching the NFL for several years.

Colin Kaepernick has been out of the league since the 2016-17 season. He recently spoke about his ousting from the league and said he often checks player stats to see how he compares.

While speaking with the host of “The Craig Carton Show,” Urlacher shared his thoughts on Kaepernick’s NFL protests, saying people should keep politics out of sports.

“Politics — I didn’t even know what I was [politically] back then,” he said. “I didn’t care, man… You can’t have the racial divide in the locker room.” He continued, “It’s just not going to work. If you do, your team is going to be sh-t.”

Urlacher didn’t stop there; the 2005 Defensive Player of the Year said that Kaepernick’s protesting and kneeling during the National Anthem would’ve sent him into a spiral.

“The thing with him taking a knee would have been really, really f–king hard for me to put up with in that locker room. That would have been something that would have probably been a line in the sand for me when it comes to stuff like that,” he said.

In 2016, Kaepernick became the talk of the sports world when he began kneeling during the National Anthem to protest racism and police brutality. His move rubbed some the wrong way, including Donald Trump.

A year later, according to PEOPLE, Kaepernick opted out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers and chose free agency. However, no teams showed interest in him after that.

Kaepernick filed a collusion grievance with the NFL in May 2018, and the legal process was settled outside of court.

Three Years Later, The NFL Said They ‘Moved On’ From Kaepernick

Three years after his last time playing in the NFL, Kaepernick received his big break when teams scheduled a workout with him at the Atlanta Falcons facility in 2019.

After some back-and-forth, though, Kaepernick and his team reportedly changed the workout location 30 minutes before the session began, upsetting even more people in the league.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell spoke about the situation and expressed his disappointment with Kaepernick’s decision. He said that the league had officially “moved on” from the quarterback, saying he had “an opportunity” and blew it.

Kaepernick recently released a book, “The Perilous Fight,” on September 15, and in an interview with NBC News, said he created the project to tell his side of an important story.

Elsewhere in the interview, Kaepernick opened up about his relationship with the NFL today and said he’s stayed away from it as they have him.

“I’m not gonna support an organization that one, is actively blackballing me, but two, has targeted my brothers who have been protesting as part of this as well,” he said. “I watch college football.”

Urlacher Has Commented On Sports Drama Before

Kaepernick isn’t the only athlete’s drama Urlacher has commented on. Earlier this summer, the former football player appeared to side with Sophie Cunningham, who said she was against transgender women competing against biological women in sports.

The WNBA player’s comments came out of nowhere, considering there are no active trans athletes playing or vying to play in the women’s league. Despite that, Urlacher seemed to love her stance.

“She’s great. Bro, she’s so fun to watch… It’s unbelievable. She’s so aggressive. She’s fun to watch. I follow her on Instagram. She’s got great stuff out there,” Urlacher uttered. “She just says what’s true. She says common-sense things, and she gets so much backlash. She’s like, ‘Men should not be playing in women’s sports.’ Why is that so controversial? I don’t get it. I don’t understand it.”
