It looks like former NBA player Enes Kanter‘s dream to play in the WNBA in 2027 won’t be coming true after all. According to a new report, sources close to the league say Kanter, who played for the Boston Celtics among other teams, is not eligible to play in the women’s league. In addition to Kanter, Royce White, who also vowed to play in the WNBA, was also ruled ineligible. The stance on both players comes just a few weeks after they attached themselves to the national conversation about transgender women competing against biological women in sports.

Sources close to the WNBA told ESPN today that Kanter “will not be eligible to play in the women’s league.” The statement comes weeks after Kanter declared for the WNBA Draft, saying he identifies as a woman.

“If simply declaring who you are is all that’s required,” he said, “then I meet every single requirement necessary to compete in the WNBA.”

Kanter said he didn’t intend to stir up trouble or harm any group of individuals. “I’m simply asking that the current rules be applied equally to everyone — the rules that represent the very values many WNBA players and coaches have publicly advocated for,” he said.

Enes Kanter Isn’t The Only One Who Is Ineligible To Play In The WNBA

Kanter isn’t the only one whose dreams of playing in the WNBA were squashed, as sources also revealed that Royce White has also been ruled ineligible.

White shared in a previous interview that he had begun identifying as “transgender,” according to The Blast. He added, “I’m a woman… I identify as sometimes identifying as a woman for purposes of… professional basketball.”

White went on to say that if he were allowed to play in the league, he believes he’d be “unstoppable,” adding that he’s a team player. “I do the little things. I led my team in all five major stat categories at Iowa State University, so I do a little bit of everything. I’ll do whatever the coach needs me to do. I’ll do whatever the girls need me to do,” he stated.

Before sources shed more light on Kanter’s possible future in the league, the former NBA player was ejected from a Chicago Sky game after getting into it with Natasha Cloud.

According to The Blast, the 34-year-old was spotted on video stepping toward Cloud during the third quarter, prompting Cloud’s WNBA teammates to hold her back.

He expressed his frustration with the situation on his X account, writing, “I just got kicked out of a WNBA game for supporting WOMEN! Let that sink in, America!”

Kanter Says He Supports Sophie Cunningham

According to The Blast, Kanter spoke with the media after his ejection and said he attended the game to support Sophie Cunningham and the Indiana Fever.

For those who may be unfamiliar, Cunningham has been at the center of a national debate after telling reporters that she was against transgender athletes competing in the WNBA.

“I said what I said. I think it’s kind of common sense,” she added, per The Blast. “And I think I’ll always believe in that. I think it’s really important to protect children, and that’s little girls who are also involved in that category. I stand on what I said.”

Kanter’s public disturbance at yesterday’s WNBA game was condemned by many, including NBA champion Kyle Kuzma. The Milwaukee Bucks player slammed Kanter in a post on X, calling him a “drama queen” for appearing to antagonize women. “Grown man stepping over the baseline at a woman,” he wrote.
