Sergei Bobrovsky’s reputation as a goaltender with an impeccable work ethic preceded him before he arrived in Toronto.

And, yes, of course the 38-year-old goaltender, whose call to the Hockey Hall of Fame will await once he retires, already has become a key voice in the Maple Leafs’ leadership group.
He knows, though, that his overall impact on the team boils down to one simple factor.
“The biggest thing for me is stopping the puck,” Bobrovsky said on Tuesday. “Stopping the puck, I will try to do my best to give the guys the chance to win every night. That’s my main focus. If I accomplish that, we’re going to go from there.”
What has stood out about Bobrovsky’s presence?
“It’s really hard to describe, I would tell you that,” Leafs coach Jim Hiller said. “You’ve watched different athletes and see them at the pinnacle of their sport, and they’re winning championships, and he fits that bill.
“He’s a champion and he’s such a humble guy. He’s a fierce competitor and he’s a gentleman and he’ll treat you with respect.

“Inside, this guy is doing everything he can to win, and it’s just great to have him around.”

Bobrovsky isn’t the type to be loud in the dressing room and might prefer to leave the rah-rah type words to others.
The Leafs, however, haven’t had a goalie with his kind of pedigree since Ed Belfour in the early 2000s. Others in the room lean in when the soft-spoken Bobrovsky has something to say.
“It’s coming from the best place,” Hiller said. “It’s hard to measure it. Let’s see as the season goes on. But I’ve talked to different players, and (they say), ‘I love this guy.’ How can you not?”
