Fire fighters quickly halt spread of smoky fire in River Ward

Ottawa firefighters worked quickly Friday afternoon to extinguish a smoky fire at a low-rise residential unit in the 1100 block of Shillington Avenue in the city’s River ward.

Initial calls starting from about 5:25 p.m. reported heavy smoke in a hallway and and billowing from the top floor of the building.

Teams arriving at the scene confirmed heavy grey smoke from the exterior west side of structure.

A fire was declared at 5:31 p.m. to summon additional resources to the scene.

Firefighters began a “fast attack,” moving a hose line inside the structure.

At about the same time, firefighters began searching the structure for any occupants. A second search was conducted, but no occupants were located.

An OC Transpo bus was on the scene to provide shelter for the residents.

The fire was declared under control at 5:45 p.m.

There were no reported injuries.

A fire service investigator was assigned to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
