A driver is facing several charges after allegedly driving recklessly, assaulting North Vancouver RCMP officers as they tried to make an arrest, and trying to grab one of the officers’ guns.

Police were called about an erratic driver headed west on Highway 1 near Mountain Highway at about 9 p.m. on Aug. 23.

Officers spotted a red Dodge Caravan matching witness descriptions near East 13th Street and St. Georges Avenue but the driver didn’t pull over. They didn’t pursue out of concern for public safety.

It was located again near Lonsdale Avenue and West 22nd Street where it crashed into the sidewalk. The driver took off on foot and was chased by officers.

“The suspect was ultimately taken into custody, but not before he allegedly assaulted police officers and attempted to disarm one police officer during the arrest process,” said RCMP Const. Mansoor Sahak. One officer was taken to hospital with injuries and was later released.

The alleged driver, 45-year-old Benjamin Kohlman of New Westminster, has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, failing to stop at the scene of an accident, resisting arrest, disarming a police officer and assault of a police officer.

Kohlman was due for a court appearance on Monday.

Sahak said investigators are still hoping to speak with witnesses on the night of Aug. 23 in the areas of Highway 1 and Mountain Highway, East Keith Road at Queensbury Avenue, and East 13th Street and St. Georges Avenue.

“Investigators are specifically looking to speak to anyone whose dashcam or CCTV may have captured the vehicle driving erratically,” said Sahak.

Anyone with information is asked to call North Vancouver RCMP at 604-985-1311.
