Billy Crudup just snagged a win at the 76th Annual Emmy Awards, taking home the trophy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role in The Morning Show. But things might have been a lot different if he had ended up playing Barry Allen’s dad in The Flash.
Instead of adding an Emmy to his shelf, he could have been linked to one of DC’s most infamous flops! Luckily for Crudup, he’s now basking in Emmy glory rather than coping with all the reactions that came after The Flash was released.
Why Billy Crudup Passed on DC’s The Flash?
Billy Crudup was initially set to play Barry’s dad in The Flash, but he had to pass on the opportunity at the last minute. Crudup, who played Henry Allen in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, had to bow out of The Flash due to a scheduling clash with his Apple+ hit, The Morning Show.
Ron Livingston later stepped into the role of Henry Allen. However, it is not surprising, given The Flash went through so many directors and release date shuffles before Andy Muschietti finally took the reins in 2019 that Crudup’s schedule just couldn’t keep up as per Variety.
The development woes of The Flash, largely stemming from the issues with the 2017 theatrical cut of Justice League, made it quite understandable for Billy Crudup to explore other opportunities.
Despite the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League in 2021, Crudup’s scheduling conflict with The Morning Show simply made his return to The Flash an impractical choice. Moreover, given that he won an Emmy for The Morning Show in 2020, it was an obvious choice!
Thank Goodness Billy Crudup Ditched The Flash for The Morning Show!
Fans are once again thanking the universe for ensuring Billy Crudup chose The Morning Show over The Flash, as the actor has scored another Emmy! Crudup, nominated once more for his role as network president Cory Ellison, has been a fixture in this category across all three seasons of the show and clinched the trophy back in 2020.
This year, he was up against his co-stars Jon Hamm and Mark Duplass, with Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon also snagging nominations for their leading roles. The Apple TV+ series made some serious waves with a staggering 16 nominations, this season!
On the other hand, The Flash was the receipt of every ounce of criticism imaginable! With a lackluster box office debut, terrible reviews, and all the Ezra Miller drama, the film wrapped up the DC Extended Universe with more of a fizzle than a grand finale. However, what’s done is done. Fans are now hoping for all good things from the DCU!
The Morning Show is streaming on Apple TV+, whereas, The Flash is available on Max.
