One person was killed and another two wounded after a gunman opened fire inside a dental office near San Diego, California, police said.

Officers with the El Cajon Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at a dental office near the intersection of Magnolia and Madison avenues at around 4:15 p.m. Thursday.

The suspect, identified as Mohammed Abdulkareem, fled the business in a white U-Haul pickup truck with an Arizona license plate, El Cajon police said in a post on X. He used a handgun to carry out the violence, said Capt. Rob Ransweiler, who added that “there were other people inside of the office” at the time of the shooting.

When they arrived on the scene, authorities found three people suffering from gunshot wounds, including a man who was pronounced dead a short time later, Ransweiler told reporters.

The other two victims, a man in his 40s and a woman in her 20s, were rushed to area hospitals. Ransweiler said they were both listed in “stable condition.” None of their names has been released.

Police announced Abulkareem had been taken into custody around 10 p.m. local time. They did not provide further details regarding his arrest, nor a motive for the violence. It was also unclear what occurred in the moments leading up to the shooting.

An investigation into the matter is ongoing. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is at the scene assisting in the probe, NBC 7 reported, as is FBI San Diego.
