Before Canadians break out the (Canadian-made) bubbly over Tuesday’s U.S. election result, we should ponder how much better the Democrats will be for this country.

As rumours of a trade deal between the two countries swirled last week, some sources suggested President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney had agreed to revive the Keystone XL Pipeline as part of any pact.
Trump hinted that this country would pay for the pipeline, while his administration would provide access for it to be built through U.S. states. Let’s not forget it was former president Joe Biden who scrapped the pipeline by revoking its cross-border permit immediately after he came to power.
Now, with Democrats in control of both houses, the pipeline could well be pushed off the table.
Canadians are now eagerly awaiting relief from tariffs and an end to the ongoing 51st state trolling by Trump. The impact of his policies was reflected in the results in many border states. Michigan, which has been impacted by tariffs on the auto industry, elected controversial Democrat Abdul El-Sayed. Maine, which has seen tourism from Canada plummet, tossed out long-time Republican Susan Collins.

Deadlock is looming in Washington. After the disastrous results piled up, Trump said he would use his presidential veto to implement his agenda.
“Historically, you veto for a couple of months and then they come and say, ‘We’ve got to make a deal,’ ” he told CBS News on election night.
He needs Democratic support to appoint judges, senior officials in the administration, and ambassadors.
Democrats should be wary of triggering rounds of retribution by tying up the administration with impeachment. Voters swept out Republicans because of concerns over the high cost of food and fuel, the war in Iran and, especially in border states, the trade war with Canada.
What they want — and need — is good government. They don’t want to grind the machinery to a halt with endless witch hunts.
In the aftermath of the vote, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he was “doing cartwheels” over the outcome. We’d urge caution. Democrats have proven to be no great friends to Canada. If Washington is gridlocked by Democrats arm-wrestling a lame-duck president for power, no one will win.
