Ed Sheeran’s weekend shows at Gillette Stadium cancelled: ‘DIFFICULT DECISION’

It’s the latest blow Sheeran’s Loop tour has suffered following Macklemore being booted from his concerts over his “Free Palestine” statements

Ed Sheeran’s two concerts scheduled for this weekend at Gillette Stadium have been cancelled.

The Loop tour and the promoter consulted local officials and “made the difficult decision to cancel” the Friday and Saturday night concerts “due to the severe weather warnings in place in Boston and across New England.”

Interestingly, the shows have not been rescheduled, with the venue noting that “refunds are available now at the point of purchase,” while ticketholders who purchased through Ticketmaster will be automatically refunded.

Stage construction for the back-to-back shows was halted amid the looming weather threat, TMZ reported.

The beginnings of the massive nor’easter storm expected to hit New England is set to begin in the Boston area on Friday afternoon, according to WBZ, with high winds — gusting to 65-90 km/h — peaking Friday night into the following morning, and the heavy rainfall intensifying later in the day Saturday.

The rapper called out Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots and their home field, Gillette Stadium, for allegedly rallying other stadium owners to blackball him.

“We were scheduled to play Gillette Stadium later this month, which is owned by the Kraft Group,” the rapper claimed in a lengthy statement on Instagram earlier this month. “Ed told me that Kraft said I would not be allowed to perform in his stadium. Ed also told me that Kraft had rallied some of the other stadium owners and collectively they gave him an ultimatum: if Macklemore stays on the tour, you will not be allowed to play in our venues.”

If Sheeran’s weekend shows were to have gone on as scheduled, it is unclear whether the singer-songwriter would have performed solo or enlisted special guests after the other opening acts and his backing band left the tour in solidarity with Macklemore.

Macklemore fights back

The concert cancellation comes a day after Macklemore announced his own concert series, the Free Palestine Tour.

“I’ve spent the last week reaching out to artists who have shown up and used their stages to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people, regardless of the consequences. Artists who understand that our platforms mean very little if we’re only willing to use them when it’s safe,” he wrote in an Instagram post on Thursday.

“Because of how quickly all of this has come together, a lot of the conversations, schedules and details are still being worked out. But this is a moment of momentum, and there is work to be done,” he continued.

“So we’re going on tour.”

All proceeds from the three shows next month in Dublin, Paris and London, Macklemore added, will “benefit organizations supporting Palestine and the Palestinian movement.”
