With Toronto’s Game 2 victory, the best-of-five Atlantic Division series is tied 1-1. The series shifts to the Coca-Cola Coliseum in Toronto for Games 3 and 4 on Sunday and Tuesday respectively.
After assisting on power-play goals by captain Logan Shaw and Vinni Lettieri, Cowan scored his first American Hockey League playoff goal at the one-minute mark of the third period.
Laval took a 2-0 lead in the first period at Place Bell on goals by Laurent Dauphin and Joshua Roy, but the Marlies recovered and ran the table on the scoreboard.
Following the goals by Shaw and Lettieri, Luke Haymes scored another Toronto power-play goal late in the second to put the Marlies up 3-2.
Cowan’s goal made it 4-2 and Cedric Pare clinched the win when he scored a shorthanded goal, into an empty Rocket net, with four minutes to play in the third. And Noah Chadwick added another power-play goal with under two minutes left to add to the Marlies’ margin.
Defenceman William Villeneuve had three assists.
In total, the Marlies went 4-for-10 with a man advantage.
In the Marlies’ four previous playoff games this spring, Cowan, who had 29 points in 66 games in his rookie season with the Maple Leafs, had two assists.
Artur Akhtyamov made 29 saves for the Marlies. Kaapo Kahkonen stopped 26 shots in the Rocket net.
If a deciding Game 5 is necessary, it will be played in Laval on May 8.
