Drugs, stolen goods seized in eastern Ontario; Whitby cyclist dies from injuries after crash

Two eastern Ontario men are facing charges in an Ontario Provincial Police investigation involving stolen property in the Township of South Frontenac.

The OPP said its Community Street Crime Unit opened an investigation into reports of stolen property earlier this month.

Police said a search warrant was executed on a property in South Frontenac on Friday where officers seized approximately 50 grams of suspected methamphetamine; approximately two grams of suspected fentanyl; a quantity of assorted pills; stolen property, including a camper trailer, an all-terrain vehicle, a dirt bike and assorted hand tools; a homemade conducted energy weapon; approximately $1,000 in Canadian currency; and digital scales.

Police said Timothy Reid, 38, of South Frontenac, was arrested and faces several charges including two counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000; possession of prohibited device or ammunition; and three counts of possession of a Schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking.

Police said Derek Veley, 57, of Greater Napanee, was also arrested and has been charged with failure to comply with a release order.

Cyclist dead in Whitby crash

A cyclist has been killed in a crash in Whitby on Friday, Durham Regional Police said.

Police said officers had responded to a collision involving a 68-year-old cyclist who was injured after colliding with a parked trailer in the area of Coronation Rd. and Lyndebrook Rd. at around 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 21.

Police said officers found the 68-year-old man suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was taken to a Toronto-area trauma centre, where he later died of his injuries.

Police said the cause of the crash is still under investigation and urged anyone with cell phone, dash cam, surveillance footage or information about this incident to contact Det.-Const. Lan of the Durham Region Police Service Collision Investigation Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5216.

Man charged in child sexual exploitation probe in Peel

A man in Peel Region is facing charges in an Ontario Provincial Police child sexual exploitation investigation.

The OPP said its Child Sexual Exploitation Unit, with the assistance of the OPP’s Caledon detachment and Digital Forensics Unit, executed a search warrant at a home in Inglewood, north of Brampton, on Aug. 12, seizing several electronic devices.

Police said James Gilbert, 53, of Inglewood, was arrested and charged with two counts of possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation material.

Police said he was released from custody following a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville on Sept. 10.
