Following the mistrial in Lindsay Clancy‘s murder case, her lead defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, made an unusual appeal to President Donald Trump and pleaded for a pardon. While the request may have limited legal implications, Trump has now addressed the request and shared his perspective on the case that has divided the nation.
Donald Trump Says Lindsay Clancy’s Case Is A ‘State Situation’
Facebook | Lindsay ClancyLindsay Clancy’s murder charges remain intact after her case ended in a mistrial on September 4. In an interview, her defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, publicly asked President Donald Trump for a pardon, despite knowing that the president has no power over state-level crimes.
As The Blast reported, the U.S. president can grant a presidential pardon only for federal crimes. However, Reddington noted that Trump may be able to influence the prosecution’s next steps, and he is doing everything in his power to keep Clancy out of prison.
Now, Trump says he won’t get involved in the case. The president noted that Clancy’s case is a “state situation” and the circumstances are “very sad.”
“There’s no winner there. There’s no win no matter what you do. Three children are dead,” said Trump, as reported by Fox News.
Clancy continues to face three charges of first-degree murder for strangling her three young children in 2023.
The President Is Leaving The Case In The Attorney’s Hands

“He’s a good attorney. I’ve heard from other people he’s a very good attorney. I hope they can work it out. That’s something they have to work out… There is no win there,” he added.
Trump previously reacted to the mistrial and said Clancy did a “horrible” thing. “There’ll be a price. It’s going to be a mental institution or jail or something,” he said, per The Blast.

Lindsay Clancy Jurors Reveal What Happened Behind Closed Doors
A G | PexelsThe jury, nine women and three men, deliberated for nearly 40 hours over seven days. They reported three deadlocks to the judge before the mistrial was declared.
In the days after the mistrial, some jury members spoke out about why they couldn’t reach a unanimous verdict. Most jurors believed Clancy was not guilty by reason of insanity, initially splitting 10-2 before eventually moving to an 11-1 vote, as noted by The Blast.
Jury foreperson Roni Carlson noted that they all agreed there was reasonable doubt, but the holdout juror did not agree with a not guilty by reason of insanity verdict.
Another juror, Nick Dargie, spoke about the lone juror and said the man could not identify a single piece of evidence to support the holdout. “There wasn’t a single piece of evidence or witness testimony that he used to prove why he was thinking the way he was,” Dargie revealed.
Investigation Into Holdout Juror Raises Questions
The identities of the jurors remain anonymous, except for those who voluntarily spoke in interviews. On September 11, NBC10 published an investigative report on the holdout juror, revealing his legal history.
As previously reported by The Blast, the revelation sparked intense backlash due to privacy and ethical concerns. However, it also raised the question of whether the juror was fit to serve because prospective jurors are asked about arrests, crimes, and active court orders during screening. While such records do not automatically disqualify someone from serving on a jury in Massachusetts, legal eligibility standards still apply.
“The test is whether he made purposeful misrepresentations during the jury selection process,” CBS News legal analyst Caroline Polisi said.
What Is Next For Lindsay Clancy?
Facebook | Lindsay ClancyThe prosecution has not publicly said whether it will push for a retrial. Criminal defense attorney Peter Elikann, who is not involved in the case but has experience with cases involving the Plymouth County DA’s Office, said they typically do not offer plea deals in criminal cases. However, he believes Clancy’s case “could be an exception.”
According to Elikann, having 12 jurors reach a unanimous verdict in the Clancy case is “unlikely,” and it would make more sense for the prosecution and defense to reach an agreement rather than retry the case.
Reddington also said he is open to negotiating a plea deal for his client, but he has also filed a motion for the judge to find Clancy not guilty.
The next court hearing is scheduled on September 29.
