President Donald Trump has praised American ranchers as “his people” while addressing growing concerns over rising beef prices.

The president made the comments while defending his decision to pause tariffs on imported beef temporarily. The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association had previously criticized the move, arguing that Trump was undercutting American cattle farmers and ranchers.

Donald Trump Says Voters Want Beef Prices To Come Down

In a brief interview on Friday, Trump showed he wasn’t backing down from his decision to pause tariffs on imported beef temporarily.

The tariff pause is in place for the next 90 days, and the president has yet to indicate whether he will extend the decision or let it expire.

However, he has indicated he doesn’t regret the move, even as consumers face higher grocery costs.

“We want to get the beef prices down, so we’ll get them down a little bit, and that’s what people want. That’s what the voters want, and that’s what I want,” Trump told reporters.

He then called ranchers his “people” and praised the “fantastic job” they are doing, but insisted that the country “needs a little help” from importers to bring prices down.

Trump’s 90-Day Beef Tariff Pause Explained

Due to the tariff move, eligible trading partners can ship 300,000 metric tons of beef into the U.S. market at lower in-quota tariff rates.

The move is expected to supplement meat production in the U.S. as persistent drought and weak snowpack continue to constrain herd rebuilding.

According to Trump, the product will be sold “at 25 percent below current market prices,” as his administration had secured a “commitment” with those select importers.

Trump, however, didn’t share which companies those commitments were made with. He did say that the incoming beef was something the country needed and would give U.S. producers the “space” to get back on track.

Ranchers Push Back After Trump Opens Door To Beef Imports

Despite the seemingly good intentions behind the tariff pause, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) released a scathing statement expressing its disappointment with the move.

They claimed that flooding the market with such imports was not the way to rebuild the American cattle herd, and that Trump’s decision would only undercut cattle producers amid their current struggles.

“This is a critical time of year for cattle producers, as we approach the season where they are making decisions regarding their herds. We are already working to rebuild after years of ongoing drought, high input costs and other challenges that have reduced U.S. cattle numbers,” penned NCBA Chief Executive Officer Colin Woodall.

He added, “[This] announcement and other market interventions throw cold water on the prospect of herd expansion and sacrifice long-term stability for short-term messaging.”

Montana Senator Tim Sheehy Pushes Back On Trump’s Beef Plan

The NCBA’s concerns were also echoed by Montana U.S. Senator Tim Sheehy in a post on X.

Sheehy acknowledged that the president’s intentions were in the right place as he seeks to lower prices for American consumers. However, he warned that U.S. cattle producers, many of whom he said are MAGA Republicans, could take the biggest hit from the tariff pause.

“The reality is this action will make it more difficult for American ranchers to rebuild our herd and bring prices down for the American people. And most importantly, this will harm our ranching families who feed the nation,” he noted.

Tim Sheehy Faces Backlash Over Trump Beef Tariff Reaction

Sheehy’s reaction to Trump’s move drew criticism from netizens who felt he was simply pontificating without offering any solutions.

“How is it gonna make it harder to rebuild the herd? That takes time, and this is a 90-day relief for the everyday consumer… which you seem to not care about with this post,” one wrote.

A second individual wrote, “Did you provide an alternative plan, or just tell him you didn’t like it?”

“If they don’t have the product, what other choice is there? You are literally out of bounds here,” one more commented.
