Ever since Wicked was announced and released in theatres worldwide a few weeks back, it has been gaining such global appreciation that knows no bounds. To say the least, besides praising Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande over their extraordinary acting chops, fans also can’t stop appreciating director Jon M. Chu for creating such a masterpiece.

That said, of course, the hype surrounding the sequel is as high as ever as well. However, there’s a twist here: The film recently had its name changed to Wicked: For Good as compared to its predecessor which simply named it Part Two. And the reason behind it is pretty simple, as the filmmaker confessed nobody wants a ‘Wicked: Part Two.’

Jon M. Chu addresses Wicked sequel’s name change

With the smash-hit success of the first part, a sequel was sure to follow (though this one was already announced by the director), and thus came along the hype for the film which was previously titled Wicked: Part Two. However, instead of going along with that name, the flick’s official title was changed to Wicked: For Good last month.

This brought about quite a bit of skepticism and mixed reactions from fans worldwide, and now, Jon M. Chu seems to finally be addressing all of those concerns. During a recent interview with Variety at the National Board of Review Awards gala carpet on Tuesday night in New York City, the filmmaker candidly said:

Who wants a movie called ‘Wicked: Part Two’? On the script, it always said, ‘For Good,’ and so it was just a point of like, ‘Do we really want to call this “Part Two”?’ And nobody wants that.

That said, there’s also a proper explanation for this name change as well: It shows exactly where the masterminds behind the project are going with it. As Chu continued to explain during the same interview, “I mean, that’s the destination. ‘For Good,’ we know, is like, ‘Where are we going with this movie? Let’s finish this thing.’

So that name change was a result of the original title feeling a bit too generic and wanting to explain what the film’s about through the title itself? Well, it so seems like it.

When is Wicked: For Good coming out?

Starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the lead in the respective roles of Glinda and Elphaba, Wicked really painted the theatres pink and green, dazzling audiences worldwide as the iconic pair shined bright in the magical adaptation. Much like the first installment, the sequel is expected to have the same effect, thus the buzz surrounding it all.

As of current, For Good is expected to hit the theatres late this year, around the same cold time that its predecessor made its way to the screens. Yes, you read that right, because Glinda and Elphaba are all set to return on November 21, 2025, making sure to enchant audiences once again while keeping their journey in the first installment still fresh in everyone’s hearts.

Additionally, this successor to the 2024 masterpiece will ostensibly be headed to an even more heartfelt journey, considering how even the changed title is a nod to one of the most emotional moments in the musical’s second act, Glinda and Elphaba’s ever-so-iconic duet “For Good.” This ballad is notably a heartfelt farewell between the said two leads.

All of this being said, prepare yourself to be left absolutely baffled with the soon-to-follow sequel as well, for For Good expects to reach your screens before you can even say pink and green.

Until then, you can watch Wicked, which is currently out on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVDs, all set to rock viewers’ screens at home as well.
