Congress is set to certify Trump’s win today. “Emilia Pérez” and “Shōgun” win big at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards. And a monster storm with dangerously cold weather is pummeling half of the U.S.
Here’s what to know today.
Congress gathers to certify Donald Trump’s win four years after he inspired a riot
Congress is scheduled to gather today amid a citywide snow emergency declaration to certify President-elect Donald Trump’s 2024 victory, exactly four years after he inspired a mob that attacked the Capitol in a failed attempt to disrupt the certification of his 2020 election loss and keep him in power.
In 2021, 147 Republicans voted to overturn the result of the election and discount electors for President Joe Biden, even though Trump had failed to produce any evidence that the result was illegitimate.
This time, Democrats are not planning to respond in kind. They intend to return Jan. 6 to its historical roots as a rote affair where the president-elect is certified without drama. Trump’s opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, has conceded defeat — and she is expected to preside over Trump’s certification today.
There are efforts to make sure an insurrection will not happen again. Democratic-controlled Congress passed a law in 2022 overhauling the certification process in a bid to prevent another insurrection-type event and make it harder for future presidential candidates to steal elections. Capitol Police and the Secret Service have raised temporary fencing around the Capitol for security, and Jan. 6 has been declared a “national special security event.

Powerful winter storm threatens U.S. with heavy snow and crippling ice
A major winter storm moving eastward from the Plains to the mid-Atlantic is expected to bring snow, sleet, ice and gusty winds to areas in its path. Millions are under blizzard warnings through tonight in parts of Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri. The National Weather Service warned of “considerable disruptions to daily life,” including “dangerous or impossible driving conditions and widespread closures.” A low pressure system is responsible for the upheaval, including “significant snow and ice” from the central Plains to the mid-Atlantic, the weather service said.
Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia are among the major Northeastern cities preparing for snowy and icy conditions today, with parts of Virginia expecting 5 to 12 inches of snow. Severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes and damaging winds could hit Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and other Southern states.

‘Emilia Pérez’ and ‘Shogun’ earn four Golden Globes each; ‘The Brutalist’ wins best drama film
FX’s “Shōgun,” a sweeping saga set in feudal Japan, took home four awards, including best TV drama series, making it the biggest small-screen winner of the night. Netflix’s “Emilia Pérez,” a genre-busting song-and-dance spectacle about a Mexican drug cartel boss who undergoes gender reassignment surgery, also took home four awards.
A24’s “The Brutalist,” an epic saga about the postwar immigrant experience, took home three awards, including best drama film and best actor for Adrien Brody. TV shows “Hacks” and “Baby Reindeer” were also honored. “Flow” won best animated film, and “Wicked” won the award for cinematic and box office achievement. See the complete winners list here.
Demi Moore delivered a powerful acceptance speech after she won her first major award for her role in “The Substance.” “Thirty years ago I had a producer tell me that I was a popcorn actress, and at that time, I made that mean that this wasn’t something I allowed to have,” she said.

Highlights from NFL Week 18
The Detroit Lions had a statement victory on ‘Sunday Night Football,’ dominating the Minnesota Vikings 31-9 to claim the NFC’s No. 1 seed, the NFC North title and a first-round bye in the playoffs. Detroit running back Jahmyr Gibbs scored three touchdowns and rushed for 139 yards in the win. Minnesota will now travel to Los Angeles to face the Rams next Monday night. NBC News sports editor Greg Rosenstein shares some other highlights:
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won the AFC South with a 27-19 win against the New Orleans Saints. They got a big performance from receiver Mike Evans, who finished with nine receptions for 89 yards. It was his 11th straight season with at least 1,000 receiving yards, tying the legendary wideout Jerry Rice.
The Denver Broncos got into the playoffs after a 38-0 win over the Kansas City Chiefs (who were resting most starters with the No. 1 seed secured). Rookie quarterback Bo Nix was impressive with 321 yards passing with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He became the first rookie quarterback ever with multiple games of at least 300 yards passing, four touchdown passes and a passer rating of 140 or higher.
The New York Jets defeated the Miami Dolphins 32-20 in what could be Aaron Rodgers’ final game. He went out with a bang, throwing four touchdowns for 503 regular-season touchdown passes in his career. He became the fifth player in NFL history with more than 500 regular-season touchdown passes, joining Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning and Brett Favre.

Staff Pick: Looking into the efficacy of nutritional supplements
Supplements, vitamins and minerals are more popular than ever. At least three-quarters of Americans take at least one supplement daily and some people — like Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for health secretary — take a lot. The FDA has limited oversight of the $60 billion industry, so how do we know if dietary supplements do what they claim? That’s what I wanted contributor Kaitlin Sullivan to find out. The research is mixed, she found, but that doesn’t seem to have stopped the love affair with pills.
