"Los Angeles is in a state of emergency and over 30,000 have been ordered to evacuate."

The situation grew so dire that staff at a senior living center had to evacuate dozens of residents in wheelchairs and hospital beds. In a dramatic display of resilience, elderly residents—one as old as 102—were pushed down the street to a nearby parking lot. Wrapped in blankets and still in their bedclothes, they waited under an ominous red sky as embers fell around them until ambulances, buses, and even construction vans arrived to transport them to safety.

The Palisades Fire was first reported at 10:30 a.m. Pacific Time on Tuesday and has rapidly grown to at least 2,921 acres with zero containment, according to CalFire (the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection).

More than 10,300 homes are threatened by the blaze, and while the number of structures damaged or destroyed remains unclear, L.A. fire officials have reported multiple burn victims. The chaotic evacuation efforts have caused significant traffic congestion on several major Los Angeles roadways, with some residents abandoning their vehicles and fleeing on foot.

Compounding the crisis, a second wildfire, the Eaton Fire, broke out Tuesday night in the hills above Altadena, a northern Los Angeles County community, prompting additional evacuation orders. CalFire reports that this fire has already burned at least 1,000 acres.
