We are only at the start of the AI revolution, and while some compare it to the rise of the internet, the two aren’t the same. The internet is a tool, but AI can act on its own, making decisions for us. Moreover, AI could widen the gap between the rich and the poor. Wealthier people could access better, AI-optimized diets, while poorer communities might be stuck with less nutritious options. This inequality already exists, but AI could make it worse.

While AI aims to make things more efficient, we need to ensure it doesn’t erode local autonomy or food identities. It’s crucial to involve everyone in discussions about how AI is used in food and agriculture, and to create regulations that prevent power from being concentrated in the hands of a few.
