Brian McKnight‘s ex-wife, Julie McKnight, is fighting back after the singer sued her over claims surrounding their late son Niko.

The singer filed a lawsuit in Georgia on April 21, 2026, claiming that his ex-wife, his son, Brian McKnight Jr., and other media outlets benefited from a “tragic family death” and also committed “malicious character assassination.”

Brian McKnight and his ex-wife, Julie McKnight, are not strangers to butting heads. The couple reportedly separated four times before finally divorcing in 2003.

Brian McKnight’s Ex-Wife Said He Already Ruined His Image

Julie is pushing back against Brian’s defamation lawsuit with a defense centered on his existing public image. She argues that her comments could not have damaged a reputation she says Brian had already harmed himself.

Her filing describes this as “pre-existing self-inflicted reputational damage.” Julie points to statements Brian allegedly made about their children in 2023. She says he publicly described them as “products of sin” and “evil.” 

She also referenced a defamation action their daughter filed against him in 2020. According to Julie’s argument, those incidents show the public that he was a terrible father. She therefore denies that her own comments created a new damaging narrative about him.

Julie filed an answer containing several affirmative defenses. She also countersued Brian, accusing him of breaking a confidentiality agreement contained in their 2014 marriage settlement.

TMZ said her response comes after Brian filed a lawsuit against her, one of his sons, Brian Jr., and bloggers, claiming they created a “shockingly dishonest” and “sensational but false narrative.”

The Singer Claims His Family Created A False Narrative

Brian’s lawsuit centers heavily on allegations surrounding his relationship with Niko before the young man’s death. Niko died from cancer in May 2025 at age 32, making his final interactions with his father a major point of the dispute.

Brian claims his family exploited the tragedy to damage his reputation. According to the lawsuit, Julie and Brian Jr. claimed Niko repeatedly told his father, “I love you,” during a call, but the plaintiff did not reciprocate. 

The “Back at One” singer alleges that Julie portrayed him as emotionally cruel by saying he refused to reciprocate those words during their son’s illness. Brian also claims Julie sent him a voice message asking him not to initiate contact with Niko.

He says he respected that request rather than abandoning his terminally ill son. Julie, however, has maintained that her version of events is truthful. The lawsuit also reaches beyond the family, naming several bloggers and media figures as defendants.

Brian claims the allegations caused reputational damage and tangible financial losses, while also accusing Marc Lamont Hill of monetizing an interview through YouTube and Patreon. PEOPLE reported that Julie’s spokesperson called the claims “completely unfounded” and said she remained confident the facts would speak for themselves.

Brian McKnight Allegedly Refused To Say He Loves His Last Son

The dispute intensified after Brian Jr. publicly described his father’s alleged reaction to Niko’s final attempts to receive affection. He called the memory one of the “darkest,” “coldest,” and “most disheartening” experiences of his life. According to his account, Niko called him crying after speaking with their father.

Brian Jr. said Niko only wanted his father to tell him that he loved him. He claimed Brian responded, “I can’t arbitrarily say that I love you.” The account became a major part of the criticism surrounding Brian’s relationship with his biological children. Julie also condemned what she described as Brian’s refusal to say those words to Niko during his final days.

She said love should come “easily, freely and often,” particularly when a child is suffering through fear and uncertainty. Julie described hearing about Niko’s experience as heartbreaking for her as his mother. Brian has disputed the account and offered a different explanation for his absence.

He claimed he wanted to help Niko during his cancer battle but said Julie prevented him from doing so after making a hostile call. The Blast shared that Julie rejected that explanation and accused Brian of trying to bait her family into what she called his “false narrative.”

Brian Says His First Marriage Was Never About Love

Brian has also offered his own explanation for why his relationship with his older children eventually collapsed. In 2025, he told podcaster Anton Daniels that his first marriage happened under religious pressure after Julie became pregnant. Brian said he had known her for less than a year when they married.

“I honored my mother, and I tried to do the right thing,” Brian said about the decision. He recalled that they married in September before welcoming their baby in November. He also insisted that he was never in love with Julie and that their children were not “made from love.”

Brian claimed the couple separated four times before eventually divorcing in 2003. The singer said their sons were the reason they remained together for as long as they did.

“The kids were the thing that kept us together as long as we were,” he told Daniels. He also disputed the idea that he abandoned his children after the divorce. Brian claimed he continued to support them financially and take them on tour, while believing outside influence changed how they viewed him.

It was highlighted by COMPLEX that Brian described his first marriage as something he “did it for the kids,” while blaming manipulation for the breakdown of his relationship with his older children.

Brian McKnight Defends His Side Of The Family Story

During the interview with Daniel, Brian said the strained relationship with his children was due to outside interference. He recalled his younger son crying during early separations and claimed the boy did not properly know him. Brian later said his children had been “poisoned” against him.

He also detailed the financial responsibilities that followed the divorce. Brian said he paid $18,000 monthly in combined child and spousal support, including $8,000 for spousal support and $5,000 for each of his two sons. He claimed the payments continued until his youngest son turned 23.

Brian also said he gave up a percentage of songs written during the marriage. His account came after Brian Jr. publicly criticized him following an $8.8 million default judgment announcement involving Julie. Brian Jr. took to his Instagram account to accuse his father of longstanding emotional absence.

“The things that my brother took to his grave… because our dad wasn’t emotionally intelligent enough nor mature enough actually to be a father,” Brian Jr. said.

He also disagreed with his father’s narrative and called him “petty.” The conflict has therefore extended far beyond one disputed conversation between a father and dying son.
