Tyler’s Rise From Welsh Clubs To International Stardom
Martin Hoeien/All Over Press Denmark/MEGABonnie Tyler’s unmistakable raspy voice made her one of the defining artists of rock and pop music, helping her build a career that spanned more than five decades.
Although she became a global sensation with “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” her journey began years earlier in Wales, where she performed in local clubs before signing her first recording contract in the mid-1970s.
Born Gaynor Hopkins, she adopted the stage name Bonnie Tyler and broke through with “Lost in France” before achieving international success with “It’s a Heartache,” which became a major hit on both sides of the Atlantic.
Early in her career, Tyler underwent surgery to remove vocal nodules, leaving her with the distinctive raspy voice that ultimately became her signature.
Rather than hindering her success, the unexpected change helped define her sound and set her apart in an increasingly competitive music industry.
Her partnership with songwriter and producer Jim Steinman later elevated her career to new heights, culminating in the release of “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” which topped charts worldwide and became one of the defining songs of the 1980s.
Bonnie Tyler’s Influence Extended Far Beyond Her Biggest Hits
Although her commercial peak came during the late 1970s and 1980s, Tyler never stopped recording or performing.
She released 18 studio albums over the course of her career, remained a popular live performer across Europe, and represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 with “Believe in Me.”
Tyler also collaborated with several acclaimed artists, including Rod Stewart, Cliff Richard, and Francis Rossi in her later years, while earning Grammy and BRIT Award nominations and widespread recognition for her contributions to music.
By the time of her death at 75, she had sold more than 100 million records worldwide and established herself as one of Wales’ greatest musical exports.
