Bonnie Tyler’s death was announced in a message shared on her official website on Thursday, July 9. 

“Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for,” the statement read per PEOPLE.

While the statement did not disclose further details about the illness, it confirmed that more information would be shared in due course. The family also requested privacy as they navigate what they described as a heartbreaking loss.

The announcement of Tyler’s passing prompted an outpouring of tributes, with public figures from around the world reflecting on her impact and celebrating her legacy.

Taking to X, Wales Secretary Jo Stevens wrote, “So sad to hear of the death of Bonnie Tyler. A Welsh music icon, Grammy and Brit award winner and the sound of my teenage years.”

Tyler’s Health Took Dramatic Turn After Emergency Surgery

Months before her death, Bonnie Tyler faced a frightening health crisis after undergoing emergency intestinal surgery in Portugal. 

The icon was rushed to a hospital near her home in Faro, where doctors performed the procedure before placing her in a medically induced coma to support her recovery. 

In a May 7 statement shared on her website, Tyler’s manager, Matt Davis, confirmed the decision, saying, “Bonnie has been put into an induced coma by her doctors to aid her recovery.” 

The statement also asked for privacy, adding, “We know that you all wish her well and ask for privacy at this difficult time please. We will issue a further statement when we are able to.” 

Earlier, Tyler’s team had revealed that the surgery had been successful and that she was recuperating, assuring fans that her family and friends were hoping for “a full and swift recovery.”

Weeks after Tyler was placed in a medically induced coma, her family offered a cautiously optimistic update on the “Holding Out for a Hero” singer’s condition. 

As PEOPLE reported, Tyler’s family and team revealed in a statement that she was no longer in a coma but remained “very unwell and in intensive care in hospital in Portugal.” 

While describing her progress as encouraging, they stressed that although her condition was improving, it was a slow process, adding that her doctors “remain confident that she will make a good recovery but it is going to take time.” 

Due to her lengthy recovery, the statement confirmed that all remaining concerts scheduled through the end of August would either be canceled or postponed until next year where possible, although there was still hope her autumn performances could go ahead. 

The family also thanked fans for the “huge outpouring of love and support,” saying Tyler was aware of the messages and “very grateful” for everyone’s good wishes while again requesting privacy.
