The first weekend of May means it’s time for the BMO Vancouver Marathon.

On May 3, thousands of runners will take to Vancouver streets on a course that winds from Riley Park, through downtown and even to the city’s west side.

The marathon is ranked as one of the world’s top destination marathons by Forbes, CNN and USA Today, and offers what organizers call the world’s longest uninterrupted waterfront path. About 25,000 participants are expected.

Due to the size of the event, road closures to allow for set up and preparation of the race route will begin on Saturday, May 2 in some areas, including Vancouver’s Riley Park, Coal Harbour and downtown.

Then on May 3, there will be impacts in Riley Park, South Cambie, Oakridge, Fairview, Kerrisdale, Dunbar, UBC, Point Grey, Kitsilano, West End, Coal Harbour, Chinatown, Yaletown, Cambie, False Creek and downtown neighbourhoods.

Participants who choose to take transit might have an easier time getting downtown, with TransLink boosting SkyTrain, SeaBus and West Coast Express service on race day.
