Toronto was trying to prevent a Dodgers rally after Bo Bichette had blasted a three-run homer, but the road team was threatening, with the bases loaded and one out against Max Scherzer. Former Blue Jay Teoscar Hernandez lined a ball into centre field, but it hung up just long enough for a diving Daulton Varsho to make a spectacular diving catch. Varsho is arguably the best defensive centre fielder in baseball and that belief was bolstered by his latest highlight reel grab.

But there was still one out to go with two runners still on.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is known for his booming bat, but he ended the inning with a run-saving diving catch toward the first-base line, robbing Tommy Edman.

The play left Rogers Centre buzzing and had Guerrero Jr. hopping off the field in delight.

Los Angeles might have scored a run in the inning, but it could have been a lot worse for Toronto.

Varsho won the 2024 American League gold glove for centre field, was runner-up for the platinum glove and was named defensive player of the year by Fielding Bible.

Guerrero Jr. has won a gold glove at first base and is a finalist again this year (the results will be announced Sunday). Varshodid not play enough games to qualify this season, but teammates Andres Gimenez, Ty France, Ernie Clement (for both third base and the utility spot) and Alejandro Kirk were.
