Although Bayern’s attention remains fixed on completing a potential domestic double following their disappointing Champions League exit, preparations for next season are already well underway behind the scenes. One of the club’s biggest unresolved issues centres around Neuer.
The 40-year-old is currently set to become a free agent this summer, though recent reports strongly indicate that the long-serving goalkeeper is expected to extend his stay in Munich for another year.
Sporting director Christoph Freund has now confirmed that Bayern are keen to avoid dragging negotiations out unnecessarily. “We have always said that we don’t want to delay it indefinitely,” the Austrian told Sky.
At the same time, Freund stressed that the final decision ultimately rests with Neuer himself. “Manu is the decisive factor,” the Bayern sporting director explained.
Of particular note was Freund’s response when asked whether clarity could arrive before Bayern face VfB Stuttgart in the DFB-Pokal final on May 23. “It’s heading in that direction, I assume so,” he said, before adding: “The season is drawing to a close, that’s our goal.”
According to kicker, Neuer is now close to agreeing a contract extension, with an official announcement potentially arriving as early as next week.
