‘Barely Breathing’ singer Duncan Sheik dies at 56 after cardiac arrest

Following breakout smash, Grammy nominee pivoted to Broadway with 'Spring Awakening'

Pop star-turned-Tony-winning Broadway composer Duncan Sheik has died at the age of 56.

His mother, Suzanne Sheik, confirmed to the New York Times that he died of cardiac arrest.

“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the passing of Duncan Sheik,” read a statement from his family that was shared to the singer-songwriter’s official Instagram page. “The world has lost a singular talent and deeply influential voice in music and theater. From his Grammy-nominated hit Barely Breathing to his groundbreaking, Tony and Grammy Award-winning work on Spring Awakening, Duncan’s artistry touched many and leaves an indelible mark on the cultural landscape.”

The message went on to note that Sheik “was a father, husband, son, brother, and friend.”

“He will be remembered for his sensitivity, wit, intelligence, and depth of spirit he brought to those who knew and loved him. We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love from his fans, friends, collaborators, and the artistic community. His musical legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Duncan passed away last night surrounded by love,” they concluded.

According to the Times, Sheik is survived by his wife, Nora Ariffin; their daughter, Ines Sheik; and his half-siblings, Peter and Kacie.

Earlier this week, Sheik’s family updated his followers on Instagram about his health, saying that he had been admitted to hospital and was in “critical but stable condition.”

“We kindly ask for privacy during this incredibly difficult time and will provide updates when appropriate,” the statement continued.

A native of Montclair, N.J., Sheik rocketed to fame after the release of his gold-selling 1996 self-titled album, which included the single Barely Breathing.

Rolling Stone gave it a four-star review, calling it “a defiant debut — beautiful and benevolent of spirit.” The Grammys took notice as well, nominating Sheik for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 1998.

According to PEOPLE, he told InStyle in 1998 that Barely Breathing came from his real-life experience of wanting to be with a woman who was with another man. “I seem to find myself in these romantic torture chambers,” he told the outlet. “Certainly your art is often driven by your suffering, so I guess in some sense I do look for it because it inspires me in a strange way.”

Sheik went from pop stardom to Broadway

After the success of his debut record, Sheik continued to release music, including the 2001 album Phantom Moon. But he could not recapture the fervent interest his first album had generated, so he turned his attention to Broadway in 2006 with the Tony-winning Spring Awakening.

“I thought, I’m not going to win in this game of trying to be Justin Timberlake,” he recalled in a 2022 interview with The Houston Chronicle, according to The Guardian. “Maybe I should try and do something different.”

“With the exception of our director, we are all kind of Broadway outsiders. We wanted to shake things up a bit. And we just set out to make this really cool piece of theatre,” Sheik told the Associated Press of the show in 2007.

Spring Awakening took home eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and ran for more than two years. It also earned a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album.

Sheik also wrote scores for a revamp of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and an adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho.

His next show, Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen, is slated to kick off next week.

Sheik also continued to release new music, including a 2011 covers LP that featured his renditions of songs by bands like Depeche Mode and Tears for Fears.

“I didn’t even know that I would necessarily put the record out, but I thought it would be great to actually record and dig inside these songs and understand their structure, arrangements, and how they’re put together,” he said in an interview with the site Pop Dose.

His final album, Claptrap, was released in 2022.
