SUMMARY

  • With Season 2 of the Avatar live action in the works, it is anybody's guess that Toph is about to show up real soon.
  • Miya Cech has been confirmed as the star who will essay the role of Toph.
  • The actor will be assisted by people from the visually impaired community.

With the first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender having left fans in awe, it didn’t come as a surprise that Netflix would very hastily turn its eyes to the second season of the series. The show was renewed for two seasons in March, 2024 itself.

The streaming giant soon set about its business of taking the second season forward. Albert Kim stepped down from the capacity of showrunner, with Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani taking over the reins of the show. But that isn’t the only major alteration for Avatar Season 2.

Toph will be one of the critical characters in the upcoming seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender

Gordon Cormier’s Aang is all set to embark on a new chapter of his journey. With the Avatar: The Last Airbender having already found a master waterbender, he must now turn his sight to fire-bending or earth-bending.

As many of the fans already know, he will prioritize the latter first, most probably taking the journey to Omashu, a city already captured by the Fire Kingdom. And that is where the Netflix live action series will welcome a new member. Aang and his team will come across Toph, a master earth-bender (albeit a blind one), who will teach the Last Airbender the craft of Earth-bending.

With the casting call for the character out by June, applications started pouring in. After all, this is the first major casting for Season 2 of the Netflix Original. And it seems like we finally have a winner, with Miya Cech walking away with the role.

With Miya Cech officially joining the cast for the series, the mystery revolving around who is going to play the character finally stands resolved. And the A Great Divide star couldn’t be happier about bagging the role.

In a video shared by Netflix, fans are given a glimpse into Cech’s timeless recreation. The 17 year-old said,

“I’m ecstatic. I have wanted to play Toph for so long. This has been like my dream since I was a little girl. So 10-year-old me is definitely living her best life. But I really hope that I do Toph justice, and play her well.” (Twitter)

Explaining the decision, the new creators and executive producers Jabbar Raisani and Christine Boylan share why they thought that Cech was the perfect fit for the role. They said,

“Miya is a brilliant performer who knows how to precisely balance the sarcastic sense of humor, stubbornness, and vulnerability that is Toph Beifong. Her physicality and emotional dexterity really put her in a class of one.” (Tudum)

The move has already generated a lot of buzz, also provoking a few questions – particularly why have they not signed a visually challenged star in the role? But to allay such doubts, it has now been made official that the star will closely work with a producer and consultant, who is blind and a professional from the blindness community, a move to ensure fair representation to the community.

Though no official release date has been set yet for the series, shooting is set to commence from October, 2024, and will be wrapped up by next March. This means that the earliest we can expect the series is by late 2025 or early 2026.
