Filmmaker Zack Snyder seems to be on a roll. After releasing the R-rated director’s cut of his space opera Rebel Moon, the filmmaker announced that work had begun on a TV series based on his breakthrough film 300. It was announced earlier this year that a prequel series was in development at Warner Bros. with Snyder’s team producing.

While fans are excited for a Game of Thrones-esque series set in Frank Miller’s 300 universe, they seem to be a bit weary of Zack Snyder’s involvement as a writer. Many have expressed their disdain for his original works such as the Rebel Moon franchise and have requested him to stick to the producing and directing part.

Ever since his stint with the DCEU ended, Zack Snyder has been working non-stop to create more original content. The filmmaker had a hit with Netflix’s Army of the Dead, which also spawned a spinoff. He continued his association with Netflix to develop the space opera Rebel Moon and the animated series Twilight of the Gods.

Now, the filmmaker has announced a prequel TV series based on his breakthrough film 300. Based on Frank Miller’s comic book series of the same name, Snyder’s film was a pop cultural phenomenon upon release, with the iconic ‘This is Sparta’ scene becoming an instant meme. The film was also commercially successful, earning over $456 million.

The filmmaker mentioned to Comic Book that work on the 300 TV series had begun and that they were still bouncing around ideas. He said,

We’re just getting ready to dive in and get to work on it. It’s super fun, I love the world. And even just in the preliminary meetings we’ve had talking about, like, ‘What if this happened or that happened,’ just a lot of it’s just really fun to like go, wow, it’s a rich standard. It’s similar to this [Twilight of the Gods] in a weird way. As far as there’s a lot of underpinnings.

Snyder is reportedly producing the series along with his wife Deborah Snyder through their The Stone Quarry productions banner.

Fans Ask Zack Snyder To Not Be Involved In Writing The 300 TV Series

While he has his set of fans, Zack Snyder has long been a polarizing filmmaker with an interesting visual style. Starting out with the well-received remake of George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, Snyder quickly established his unique visual style of high-contrast imagery, slow-motion action beats, and Biblical references with 300.

While the filmmaker has since scaled up in terms of the projects he has handled, his writing has received constant criticism. Many have pointed out his overindulgence with the characters, especially in films like Rebel Moon. Hence, many fans have expressed their disapproval of Snyder writing the upcoming 300 TV series.

As long as he isn't the writer it could be a cool show

Why would he direct a remake of the same story he's already directed so well, but instead now it's gonna be several hours longer and definitely not as good. He could've done smtg else, like a fantasy or mystery-thriller or horror. He would do well with those instead of this.

A show based on the last truly good thing he was involved with. Nice

As long as it’s not rebel moon quality we will be seated

The filmmaker also co-wrote the screenplay of the low-rated 300: Rise of an Empire. Though no confirmations have been made, fans seem to want to nip it in the bud.

300 is available to stream on Netflix.
