Amy Winehouse’s Dad On The Hook For Millions After Bringing A ‘Weak Claim’ Against Her Friends

Amy Winehouse‘s father’s account balance would soon be about a million dollars less.

In the ongoing case between Mitch Winehouse and his late daughter’s friends, the court has ruled in their favor. Now the musician’s father has racked up seven figures in legal expenses after accusing them of profiting from auctions of her belongings.

Amy Winehouse’s dad took the case to court after allegedly offering Naomi Parry and Catriona Gourlay money for the proceeds of the 2021 and 2023 auctions.

The late pop star’s father has been ordered to pay about $1 million to his daughter’s friend after losing his case over the auction of items from Amy’s wardrobe, among others. Mitch claimed that Parry and Gourlay had profited from selling dozens of his daughter’s properties in the United States at auctions dating back up to five years.

He also claimed that the women “deliberately concealed” their sale, but Ms Justice Clarke threw out the claim in April after it was discovered that he “knew all along” about the intended sale. She explained that Mitch started pursuing his daughter’s friends for money in an “aggressive and unpleasant way” after the sale.

Mitch, in his failed legal attempt, has incurred at least $1,274,121 (£950,000) in legal costs, excluding the legal fees for Parry and Gourlay that he has been ordered to cover.

The judge said that as of April, Parry’s costs were estimated at $959,474.36 (£715,361), while Gourlay’s were $653,602.05 (£487,132). She then ordered Mitch to pay interim payments to each of the women within the next two weeks: $763,889.99 (£569,330) to Parry and $529,019.13 (£394,521) to Gourlay.

As reported by BBC News, Judge Clarke said, “The claimant chose to bring an inherently weak claim, pursue it aggressively and relentlessly to the end.” She added that Mitch made “ serious and unfounded allegations against the defendants which significantly damaged their reputations, career prospects, financial security and health.” 

She went on to explain that, in pursuing his claim, Mitch had deliberately turned the case into an expensive legal battle. According to Clarke, the musician’s father’s actions were “calculated to exert commercial pressure on the defendants to settle on his terms.”

Speaking further, the judge condemned the “Valarie” singer’s dad’s “unreasonable conduct” towards his daughter’s friends. She stated that the case had become particularly serious because Parry and Gourlay had stood faithfully by Amy, Mitch and the rest of the family, demonstrating “their honesty and integrity over many years.”

Ruling that Mitch cover the women’s legal costs on an indemnity basis was in line with her ruling, as it is often awarded when one side in the legal battle has behaved particularly unreasonably.

As earlier reported by The Blast, it was clarified in court that Mitch participated in the 2021 auction contrary to his claim that the sales went on behind his back. The singer’s friends reportedly sold over 100 pieces of clothing from Amy’s wardrobe with claims that the items were given to them before her tragic death in 2011.

But instead of letting the proceeds go to the Amy Winehouse Foundation as previously agreed, he changed his mind after the event. The late singer’s father requested that only 30% of the proceeds go to the foundation while 70% go to his daughter’s estate, which he controls.

Court documents also disclosed that Mitch allegedly offered Parry $250,000 in exchange for what she had earned from auctioning off the late performer’s wardrobe items.

He promised that if she had accepted the quarter million he was offering, it would “make all this go away.” Parry reportedly told him  that she would “rather set the money on fire than give him a penny.”

The brunt of Amy’s drug addiction and alcoholism was placed on her ex-husband’s shoulders, Blake Fielder-Civil, who reportedly introduced her to heroin and cocaine. After years of silence, he recently spoke up, explaining why he is not to bear the full responsibility of her death.

Fielder-Civil admitted that he had a part to play in his former lover’s demise as they developed an addiction together but noted that the six-time Grammy winner had a mind of her own and made her own decisions. “Amy herself had agency. And that is in no way at all disrespecting her by saying that, but Amy did what she wanted to do,” he shared.

As reported by PEOPLE, when the pair met, they were not really into drugs. Feilder-Civil revealed that they broke up for the first time when Amy’s drinking got to be “a bit too much,” but through the years of their own and off-and-on relationship leading up to their marriage in 2007, they became drug addicts together.

“I never blamed a person that gave me drugs for the first time. I’ve never tried to put that on anyone. Why would I?” he explained, adding that he did not force the singer to engage in substance abuse.
