The Blue Jays announced that their young right fielder, who came into his own during the team’s memorable playoff run a year ago, will undergo season-ending surgery on his right elbow.

Barger’s 2026 season ends with nine games played and just one hit in 22 at-bats.

Not exactly what anyone was thinking would be the final numbers after Barger’s 2025 season, when he contributed 21 home runs and 74 runs batted in to the American League champion Blue Jays.

Now the concern is how much of 2027 this important piece of Toronto’s roster will miss.

According to published reports, Barger either will have Tommy John surgery on the elbow, or internal brace surgery.

Depending on what the doctors find when they open up the elbow, the rehab could be a lengthy one.

That the injury occurred on one of the most impressive outfield throws of an otherwise defensively forgettable season for the Jays makes this injury that much tougher to take.

Barger’s plus-101 m.p.h. throw from right field gunned down Jorge Soler at the plate on May 9 in a game against the Los Angeles Angels, but the next day Barger was out of the lineup. He never got back to the field.

Manager John Schneider told media before the game in Boston that Barger had been experiencing elbow pain before that, but was playing through it. That all-out throw exacerbated the issue.
