When it comes to anime, parenting has always been an undertone of controversy for more than a handful of titles. From dads abandoning their children at a young age to pushing them in the most emotionally tragic ways, the stories of bad parenting are endless, often with no sense of redemption at all.
However, not all is dark; some dads do find a way to redeem themselves, creating a beautiful redemption narrative to an otherwise negative narrative. Here are some of the deadbeat anime dads who somehow redeemed themselves against all odds.
1 Isshin Kurosaki Was the Best Anime Dad Redemption Story
Isshin and Ichigo from Bleach | Credits: Studio PierrotAt first glance, Isshin Kurosaki from the Bleach anime seemed like an irresponsible clown of a father; he doesn’t really show much seriousness, jokes around, and is absent during several emotional points where parenting is needed. However, he isn’t what he really seemed at the beginning.
As the story progressed, we discovered that Isshin sacrificed nearly everything to protect his family – gave up his Soul Reaper powers, devoted years to keeping Masaki alive, and silently carried enormous grief after her death. To top that, when Ichigo needed guidance the most, Isshin finally opened up and helped his son understand both his powers and himself.
2 Hohenheim’s Redemption Was Slow and Deeply Human
Van Hohenheim from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood | Credits: Bones Inc.We can’t deny that at the opening of the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood anime series, Hohenheim seemed like a terrible father. He abandoned Trisha, Edward, and Alphonse – Ed especially grows up resenting him. However, his redemption came from the story itself, and it felt as deeply human as it could get.
Hohenheim left because he was trying to stop Father and prevent a nationwide catastrophe – he also feared watching his loved ones die while he remained immortal. What makes his redemption powerful is that he spends years preparing to save Amestris while genuinely loving his family deeply. His peak comes when he ultimately helps save the entire country and dies mourning Trisha at her grave.
3 Endeavor’s Painful Self-Awareness Made His Redemption Satisfying
Endeavor‘s redemption in My Hero Academia doesn’t really come across as a literal one; it’s more of a slow character arc of growth filled with painful self-awareness. Enji Todoroki was an abusive father who treated his children like experiments in his obsession with surpassing All Might – emotionally destroying them and breaking the family apart.
However, he never pretended to deserve easy forgiveness. As the series progressed, he was fully aware of why he had done it, especially after encountering Dabi and Shoto. He protects society relentlessly, acknowledges his abuse openly, and accepts that his family may never forgive him; that already makes him a responsible parent.
4 Toji Sacrifices Himself as His Past With Megumi Becomes Too Heavy
Megumi and Toji Fushiguro in Jujutsu Kaisen | Credits: MAPPAThis one caught us off guard during the Jujutsu Kaisen anime’s Shibuya Incident Arc. Toji Fushiguro was a terrible father – he abandoned Megumi, sold him to the Zenin Clan, lived selfishly as a mercenary and assassin, and showed almost no outward parental affection. But one single word turned his whole world around.
When he encounters Megumi in Shibuya, Toji learns that Megumi carries his name – Fushiguro – instead of the Zenin Clan’s. After realizing that his son escaped the clan’s control, Toji makes the ultimate choice. He kills himself so that he can’t hurt Megumi anymore – an act of sacrifice that redeemed him immediately.
5 Fugaku’s Acknowledgement Was His Final Moment of Redemption
Fugaku Uchiha from Naruto | Credits: Studio PierrotFugaku Uchiha wasn’t a good father to either of his sons in the Naruto anime – Sasuke and Itachi. While he never acknowledged Sasuke’s hard work or achievements, he also pressured Itachi immensely. But his final moments during the Uchiha Clan Massacre defined his redemption.
Before the end, instead of resisting or cursing his son, Fugaku acknowledges Itachi’s suffering and entrusts Sasuke to him in their final moments. The truth is, he deeply loved his sons, but was torn between his role as clan leader and the Uchiha coup tensions.
