Preußen Münster are relegated to 3. Liga after two seasons in 2. Bundesliga. A 1-1 draw with Darmstadt was not enough to keep Alois Schwartz‘s side in the division. The hosts played the last hour of the game with ten after a straight red card to Jerrit Hendrix.
Preußen Münster’s captain started the game the way he ended last week’s 3-3 draw with Hannover as he set up Shin Yamada’s strike in the eighth minute. The Japanese striker scored in three of his last four games.
However, Darmstadt pulled level in the 15th minute when Isac Lidberg did the same with a composed finish after Charalampos Makridis dispossessed in the danger zone. Hendrix’s red card further dented their slight hopes of survival as he was sent off for a challenge on Killian Corredor in the half-hour mark.
Corredor also won a penalty-kick before the half-time break, but Johannes Schenk made up for the mistake that led to the decision by denying Lidberg from the spot. The Swede striker missed a chance to go ahead of Mateusz Żukowski and Noel Futkeu in the scoring chart with his 18th goal of the campaign.
Despite their best efforts after the break, Preußen Münster were unable to secure their first win since the first day of March. As a result, they became the first relegated team from this season’s 2. Bundesliga. Darmstadt stay in fifth, although they have only picked up two points from their last six games.
